INTRODUCTION:

This position is responsible for producing the Siletz Tribal Newspaper, Tribal informational documents, press releases, and for organizing public relations activities as necessary.

DUTIES:

Serve as Editor of Siletz News in accordance with established tribal editorial policy.
Research and write stories and articles for the Siletz News based on information gathered from the Tribal Council and tribal administrative and program staff.
Edit articles submitted by others for publication.
Prepare paper layout with pictures, and coordinate printing.
Obtain the Tribal Chairman and/or Chief Executive Officer’s input and approval for newspaper content prior to publication.
Publish and disseminate newspaper.
Attend functions and special events to obtain photographs, interviews and information for Siletz News articles.
Serve as editor of the quarterly confidential newsletter. Edits articles submitted by others for publication. Write occasional articles based on information gathered from Tribal Council and tribal administration and program staff. Prepare layout and coordinate printing. Obtain Tribal Chairman’s input and approval prior to publication.
Serve as editor for monthly newsletter for tribal members in Lincoln and Tillamook counties. Edit articles submitted by others for publication. Write occasional articles based on information gathered from Tribal Council and tribal administration and program staff. Review layout/content prepared by PI Assistant prior to publication.
Serve as editor of the Tribal Annual Report. Assemble information and reports from the Tribal Council and the Tribal administrative and program staff. Lay out reports in appropriate Annual Report format. Obtain Tribal Council's and Chief Executive Officer’s approval for publication. Ensure document is printed as specified. Distribute the Report according to Tribal Council's instructions.
Supply appropriate information to web content specialist for Tribal website and social media.
Set up and host radio programs and/or podcasts as necessary.
Establish and maintain communications and professional relationships with media representatives i.e. newspapers, TV, and radio stations.
Write, assemble, and edit articles by the Tribal Council and Tribal staff, for publications other than Siletz News.
Coordinate with the Tribal Chairman and Chief Executive Officer the preparation and distribution of timely press releases to inform the general public about important Tribal programs, activities, and critical tribal issues.
Assist the Tribal Chairman and Chief Executive Officer in organizing and conducting public relations activities, such as news conferences, radio/TV/newspaper interviews, editorial (written/video) commentary, podcasts, etc. as appropriate for the purpose of informing the media and general public about critical Siletz issues and programs.
Consult the Tribal Attorney for accuracy and clarity, all articles of a sensitive, controversial or legal nature intended to be published in the Siletz News and other publications.
Coordinate tribal advertising with local and national media within annual budget.
Prepare quarterly reports for Tribal Council.
Develop annual program budget and monitor expenditures.
Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor's degree in Journalism with extensive coursework in graphic design, editing, communications, or technical writing and one year experience in a position that required extensive writing, -OR-an equivalent combination of education and/or experience. NOTE: Sample of writing needs to be included with application materials.

Knowledge of:

Publication design and excellent use of the English language.
Desktop publishing software, word-processing, and graphics. Prefer experience with Adobe Creative Suite (especially InDesign and PhotoShop).

Experience in:

Working in an environment that’s fast-paced one day and slower the next.
Incorporating ideas from several people into an article, news release, etc.
Managing workload without daily direct supervision.
Recognizing the boundaries of your authority.
Working on deadline and handling last-minute changes.

Ability to:

Prepare clear and concise reports and articles for publication based on interviews and research conducted on various subjects.
Establish and maintain professional contacts and relationships with key media personnel including newspapers, television, and radio stations.
Organize public relations activities, such as news conferences, radio/TV/newspaper interviews, editorial (written/video) commentary, podcasts, etc.
Type 40 words per minute.
Skillfully use 35 mm digital camera.
Work evenings and weekends, occasionally.

Must possess a valid Oregon State driver's license, insurance and be eligible to drive a GSA vehicle.
