Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the Development Section of the Communications Campaigns Service, Campaigns and Country Operations Division of the Department of Global Communications. The incumbent will report directly to the Chief of the Development Section. The Development Section promotes the UN's work in the areas of economic, social and sustainable development. Main areas of work include the Sustainable Development Goals including poverty, water, oceans, biodiversity, sanitation, population, health, gender equality, food security, aging, youth, persons with disabilities and Least Developed Countries. Also promotes the work of the Economic and Social Council, the Department of Economic and Social Affairs, major economic and social reports and communication technologies for development. This position is temporarily available through mid-September 2025, subject to the funding availability.
Responsibilities
•Ensures implementation of information programs to publicize priority issues and/or major events, to include information strategies, coordinating efforts, monitoring and reporting on progress, taking appropriate follow-up action, and analyzing the outcome. •Undertakes activities to promote media coverage (e.g. press conferences, interviews, press seminars and other special activities) of priority issues and/or major events, to include development of a media strategy and action plan, initiating pro-active media outreach efforts, proposing and arranging press conferences/media coverage, disseminating materials and consulting with press on approach/story angle and other information requests, undertaking appropriate follow-up action and analyzing and reporting on the impact of coverage. •Produces or oversees production of a specific type or types (e.g. print, broadcast, web, social media) of information communications products (e.g. press kits, press releases, explainers, feature articles, speeches, booklets, brochures, backgrounders, multimedia and social media), to include proposing topics, undertaking research, determining appropriate medium and target audience, preparing production plans, writing drafts, obtaining clearances and finalizing texts, editing copy, and coordinating design approval, printing procedures and distribution. •Guides content development of graphic, text and multimedia assets, in close liaison with the Digital Campaigns, UN web, video and social media teams. •Curates and edits content from around the UN system, including from field offices, on SDG action. •Monitors and analyzes current events, public opinion and press, identifies issues and trends, and advises management on appropriate action/responses. •Initiates and sustains professional relationships with key constituencies. •Acts as focal point on specific issues, monitoring and reporting on developments and responding to inquiries. •Provides guidance to, and may supervise, more junior staff.

Education
An advanced university degree (Master's or Doctorate degree, or equivalent) in public information, journalism, international relations, public administration or related fields is required. A first-level degree (Bachelor's degree or equivalent) in the specified fields of studies with two additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, international relations, public administration or related area is required. Experience as an editor/writer, preferably for media and digital platforms is required. Experience in the areas of sustainable development and the Sustainable Development Goals, are required. Experience in handling General Assembly processes and mandates is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
