Pay Rate: $18.66/hr.
JOB SUMMARY
The purpose of the Public Information Officer is to support the City Manager’s Office in implementing a comprehensive centralized program of public information through various media.
MAJOR DUTIES
1. Plans, develops, and implements communications programs and methods to inform and educate the media, City staff and any responsible for the updating of the City’s various social media accounts,
City website, and other media channels as directed.
2. Act as a spokesperson for the City Manager’s office to the media as necessary; advises
City Management on the response to the news events and the impact City policies on various issues.
3. Provide advice and guidance to City Management concerning public relations and public’s impact of proposed or actual policies and procedures and decisions as necessary. Identify and assess the public ‘s information needs by researching and evaluation information requests while evaluating the
City’s public relations goals and objectives.
4. Develops policies and procedures regarding the release of information by City personnel with the guidance of the City Manager’s office; assists departments in the development of effective means of communications while monitoring and assisting with the developments of interdepartmental. communication. Extracts information from databases and compile reports.
5. Makes recommendations and works with the IT department on ways to improve the teleconferencing experience
6. Operates a computer to enter, retrieve, review and/or modify data; verifies accuracy of data and makes corrections as needed; utilizes all computer systems, programs, internet and intranet. performs basic maintenance of computer systema and office equipment such as backing up data and/or replacing paper, ink, toner, etc.
7. Communicates with supervisor, other departments, county officials, employees, applicants, vendors, media, state/local agencies, the community/public, outside agencies, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information to resolve problems.
8. Develops goals and objectives, sets priorities, develops work plans and monitors and measures program effectiveness.
9. Contributes to department goals by accomplishing related duties as required.
10. Assists with departmental projects as needed.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
1. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
2. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
3. Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to manage sensitive and confidential situations with tact, professionalism, and diplomacy.
4. Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
5. Proficient with Zoom and/or other teleconferencing software required.
6. Experience with Facebook, Twitter, and/or other Social Media Platforms required.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The PIO assigns work in terms of very general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include industry standards and best practices, hardware and software manuals, and city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
- The work consists of varied technical duties in the administration of the City Manager’s office and social media. Frequently changing industry standards contributes to the complexity of the position.
CONTACTS
- Contacts are typically with members of the co-workers, other city personnel, contractors, vendors, elected and appointed officials, and members of the public.
- Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
- The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and distinguishes between shades of color.
- The work is typically performed in an office or computer room.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- College degree preferred or equivalent: or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
- Must be able to lift 40 pounds at times.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $19.76 - $25.38 per hour
