GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
The PIO Intern, under the general direction of the Public Information Officer, will provide the student with a close look at what it is like to be a Public Information Officer for a busy Sheriff’s Office. The student will have the opportunity to take part in writing social media posts, stories for the Detail Newsletter, press releases, organizing press conferences and observing press briefings.
The student will have the opportunity to participate in many of the tasks the PIOs handle, such as video production, website content and the annual report. All tasks assigned will be done under supervision and approval of the PIOs.
The student will have the opportunity to learn about other departments at the ACSO to allow for a diverse experience. The student will be able to participate in ride alongs with patrol deputies, learn about investigations, sit with 911 dispatchers, visit the Detention Facility and much more.
The student will work approximately 16-20 hours per week, not to exceed 20 hours. Each term will be 12-14 weeks, depending on the semester and the schedule can be flexible to fit the student’s needs.
This internship is unpaid.
Upon completion of the internship, documentation of the student’s attendance and performance will be provided to the intern and their school through the PIO designee. Failure to report for their assigned times, violation of confidentiality guidelines or any action that may discredit the program, the Sheriff’s Office or their school, may be grounds for termination of the student’s internship. Termination will be only at the approval of the Sheriff or his designee.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Qualified students should possess excellent writing skills. The student is expected to have computer skills and be comfortable using Microsoft Outlook, Teams, Word, Power Point and Excel. Knowledge of Adobe and Canva are a plus. The student must also be a digitally savvy student who knows the basics of shooting and editing videos. The student should also possess knowledge of social media sites including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube. The student must be able to take photographs and have a working knowledge of how to shoot, edit and produce video-based content for social media platforms or for release to traditional media outlets.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must be a Junior or Senior at an accredited college or university OR a graduate student at an accredited college or university with a declared major.
- Must submit two letters of recommendation from an accredited college or university faculty members.
- Must be able to provide a minimum of three writing samples.
- Must adhere to the dress code and policies and procedures pertaining to the department employees.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must possess a valid Driver's License.
