Under the direction of the Superintendent/President, the Public Information Officer (PIO) will play a crucial role in crafting and disseminating information about the college’s programs, events, initiatives, and achievements. In addition to managing the college’s public image, the PIO is responsible for developing communication strategies that engage students, faculty, staff, and the surrounding community. The PIO will also manage and oversee the college’s overall web presence including the website and social media.
Oversee all internal and external communications, college website, marketing, advertising, newsletters, social media, etc. for the purpose of achieving organizational objectives, and ensuring compliance with legal, and financial requirements.
Regularly utilize digital analytics to assess the outcome of communications strategies and adjust course as necessary to meet identified metrics. Employs website and social media analytic tools to determine efficacy of campaigns and return on investment of District efforts.
Leverage various communication channels, including social media, press releases, website articles, and newsletters, to ensure that accurate and timely information.
Foster a positive and transparent relationship between the college and its constituents and ensure communication and marketing align with the College’s mission and values, specifically the college’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility, and anti-racism (DEIAA).
Collaborate with a variety of vendors regarding marketing, communications, branding, and other related functions.
Assist administrators, faculty, and staff in effectively presenting and/or improving information pertinent to their programs, services, and activities to promote understanding and support for the District.
Assist administrators with media relations and crisis communications during crisis situations; facilities public safety information during an emergency or natural disasters.
Gather information and write news releases, fact sheets, press statements, feature articles, special articles, speeches, postings, scripts, and reports, which describe and highlight college and District activities such as educational opportunities, accomplishments, athletics, recreation, arts, and other community benefit programs. Edits and revises materials for publication.
Develop internal communications, bulletins, web site content, and related materials for employees concerning policy and organizational changes, special programs, staff achievements, awards, and news of general interest to employees.
Oversee, update, and maintain content on Web pages and social media platforms such as LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, X, YouTube, Snapchat, and other relevant and evolving social media platforms. Utilize search engine optimization as well as other digital marketing tools.
Prepare a wide variety of often complex documents and materials (e.g. press releases, newsletters, service guides, annual reports, budgets, materials for the Superintendent/President, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities and issues, conveying information, meeting compliance requirements, and/or providing supporting materials.
Support the promotion of special events that serve as outreach tools for the public and news media. Arrange news conferences, ceremonies, facility openings, meetings, and itineraries for District officials and official visitors. Works closely with the College Events Coordinator.
Collaborate with the district events team for the purpose of facilitating and implementing district communications with students and the community.
Attend a variety of meetings (e.g. monthly Board meetings and evening meetings, facilitating and participating in district retreats, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring implementation of district public information.
Develop and implement the District Communication Plan (e.g. developing public information written materials, collaborating in explanation of Emergency Communications System for the district, determining media strategies, consulting with legal, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring optimal articulation of all District Communication Plan processes.
Manage marketing budget allocations, expenditures, fund balances and related financial activities for the purpose of ensuring that allocations are accurate, revenues are recorded, expenses are within budget limits and/or fiscal practices are followed.
Participate in meetings (e.g. professional associations, develops networks, workshops, seminars, conferences, committees, etc.) for the purpose of conveying and gathering information regarding a wide variety of subjects required to carry out their administrative responsibilities.
Perform personnel functions (e.g. interviewing, hiring, training, evaluating, supervising, terminating, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining adequate staffing, enhancing productivity of personnel and achieving objectives within budget.
Serve as a liaison between the district and media representatives for the purpose of conveying information, publicizing events, and enhancing the relationship of the district and the community.
Coordinate publication and/or advertising activities by obtaining bids, planning and maintaining production schedules, finalizing proofs, resolving production problems, ensuring specifications have been met, and tracking results.
May represent the college and District at internal and external events serving as the spokesperson on designated public relations matters.
Monitor news flow for effectiveness and efficiency.
Serve on a variety of District committees as requested. Participate in district all staff events including but not limited to all campus team building day, convocation, state of the college address, senior day, and graduation.
Performs related duties as assigned by the Superintendent/President.
Education and Experience:
Any combination equivalent to: Bachelor’s degree in related field and four years of progressively responsible work experience comparable to the position.
- Communications: Experience communicating with a wide variety of college stakeholders including students, employees, media (press releases), and the community at large.
- Marketing: Skilled at marketing programs and services, branding and graphic design, project management, and designing and implementing marketing plans.
- Website and Social Media: Strong strategic digital marketing and communication skills including web design, web content management, multimedia programming and technology, digital imaging, multiple social media platform engagement, and digital analytics.
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with administration, other managers, classified, faculty, and other employees.
- Prepare and maintain a variety of records, forms and reports.
- Perform a wide variety of online and technical duties.
- Train and supervise assigned staff.
- Maintain a professional environment in an office setting.
- Perform highly detailed and precise quality work.
- Work cooperatively within a team environment in a diverse setting and maintain effective working relationships.
